{"id":24510,"date":"2021-05-26T08:22:48","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T06:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/?p=24510"},"modified":"2021-05-26T08:22:48","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T06:22:48","slug":"what-to-see-portovenere-gulf-of-poets-eastern-liguria-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/what-to-see-portovenere-gulf-of-poets-eastern-liguria-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"Portovenere in Liguria (northern Italy), what to do and see in one day in this hidden gem near Cinque Terre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For my first <strong>day-trip to the Gulf of La Spezia<\/strong> I chose to <strong>visit Portovenere<\/strong>, one of the <strong>most beautiful medieval towns in Liguria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>old fishermen\u2019s village<\/strong> is famous for the <strong>fortress<\/strong> that dominates the peninsula, the <strong>colourful houses<\/strong> overlooking the sea, the <strong>ancient churches<\/strong> and several <strong>hiking trails<\/strong> that allow you to reach <strong>Cinque Terre <\/strong>and other <strong>places of interest across the coast around La Spezia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That is the reason why <strong>Portovenere<\/strong> together with <strong>Cinque Terre<\/strong> were declared a <strong>World Heritage Site <\/strong>by <strong>UNESCO<\/strong> in <strong>1997<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this article I want to share with you some useful information about<strong> how to reach Portovenere without car<\/strong>, which are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.co.uk\/s\/?q=Porto%20Venere,%20Italy&amp;lc=l35566&amp;searchSource=2&amp;partner_id=T8F8PZB&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;utm_source=stefano.bagnasco%40hotmail.com&amp;placement=button-cta&amp;cmp=PVENERETOUR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>best day-tours available from La Spezia and Tuscany<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> as well as a <strong>recommended<\/strong> <strong>itinerary of the visit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Where is Portovenere?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The town is located at the southern end of a small peninsula which forms the <strong>western tip of the Gulf of La Spezia<\/strong>. The city of La Spezia is just 13 Km away.<\/p>\n<p>This area is also named <strong>Gulf of Poets<\/strong> as it welcomed many writers and poets over the centuries. <strong>Dante Alighieri<\/strong>, <strong>Petrarch<\/strong>, <strong>Lord Byron<\/strong>, <strong>Mary Shelley<\/strong>, <strong>D. H. Lawrence<\/strong>, <strong>Virginia Woolf<\/strong> and <strong>George Sand<\/strong> are some of the artists that came here to find the inspiration for their works.<\/p>\n<p>Then, together with the <strong>three islands of Palmaria <\/strong>(which is partially inhabitated), <strong>Tino and Tinetto<\/strong>, <strong>Portovenere<\/strong> constitutes a <strong>Regional Natural Park<\/strong>. Established in 2001, its unique landscape comprises high coasts, caves, Mediterranean vegetation and a marine protected area.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How to get to Portovenere?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is <strong>no train station there<\/strong> so the best way to reach it is <strong>by bus from La Spezia<\/strong>. The <strong>ATC bus lines 11\/P<\/strong> leaves every 15-30\u2019 from <em>Viale Garibaldi <\/em>(not Fridays, from 7am to 7pm) and <em>Via di Monale <\/em>(only Fridays, from 7am to 7pm).<\/p>\n<p>Both <strong>bus stops<\/strong> are located 10-15\u2019 by walk from La Spezia Railway Station (<em>Centrale FS<\/em>). <strong>Travel time to Portovenere<\/strong> is around 30 minutes. Maritime services connect La Spezia to Portovenere, Lerici, Levanto and the towns of Cinque Terre. Having said that, the <strong>parking areas available<\/strong> are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>P1<\/strong>, from <em>Via Olivo<\/em> to <em>Arenella<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>P2<\/strong>, from <em>Arenella<\/em> to <em>II\u00b0 traversa Olivo<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>P3<\/strong>, <em>Salita Cavo<\/em> and <em>Via Garibaldi<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>P Golfo<\/strong>, in <em>Cavo locality<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you are coming <strong>from Genoa and Pisa<\/strong> you must follow the <strong>motorway A12<\/strong> up to <em>Santo Stefano di Magra<\/em> exit, which is valid also for those arriving <strong>from Parma<\/strong> along the <strong>motorway A15<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The best day-trips to Portovenere and Cinque Terre<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Another chance to visit this wonderful area is to take part in <strong>excursions and guided tours<\/strong> leaving <strong>from La Spezia<\/strong>, <strong>Genoa<\/strong>, <strong>Milan<\/strong>, <strong>Florence <\/strong>and <strong>Pisa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are many <strong>options available for all needs and interests<\/strong>. So you have plenty of time for enjoying <strong>panoramic tours of the islands of Palmaria<\/strong>, <strong>Tino <\/strong>and <strong>Tinetto<\/strong> with boats departing from the <strong>harbour<\/strong> along Calata Doria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Portovenere<\/strong> is also the starting point of <strong>hiking trails<\/strong> <strong>to Campiglia <\/strong>and <strong>Riomaggiore<\/strong>. Besides that, the <strong>Palmaria<\/strong> is crossed by a <strong>scenic walk<\/strong> with stunning views over the Gulf of Poets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Aldo Moro promenade<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The main road from the bus stop leads to the \u201c<strong>Passeggiata Aldo Moro<\/strong>\u201d, from where you catch the first glimpse of the beauty of Portovenere.<\/p>\n<p>Through this coastal walk you get to most of the <strong>beaches of Portovenere<\/strong>, which consist mainly of pebbles and stones. It stands on the top of the rock and it looks like a fortified castle.<\/p>\n<p>Consecrated in 1198, it was erected over a pre-existing <strong>5th-century Palaeo-Christian church<\/strong> whilst the new <strong>gothic part dates back to 1256-1270<\/strong> and it is easily recognizable thanks to the black and white stripes. Today it offers <strong>amazing views over the bay and beyond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do you know that\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Church of St Peter<\/strong> is linked to the name of this town. Indeed, it was built upon an ancient<strong> Pagan temple dedicated to Venus Ericina<\/strong>. Situated close to St Peter\u2019s Chuch, from here the English poet swam across the Gulf of La Spezia to San Terenzo in Lerici to visit Percy Shelley in 1822. It was built around <strong>1161<\/strong> during the <strong>Republic of Genoa<\/strong> in a strategic position to control the area. <strong>Doria Castle<\/strong> has undergone many trasformations over the time, especially between 15th and 17th centuries. During the <strong>Napoleonic period <\/strong>it served as a political prison as well.<\/p>\n<p>Today you can admire the castle\u2019s exterior or pay a small <strong>entrance fee<\/strong> (5\u20ac) to visit it inside. The inscription <em>Colonia Januensis 1113<\/em> is still visible on it as it marks the beginning of the domination of the Republic of Genoa here in Portovenere. Just adjacent to the city gate is the <strong>Capitolare Tower<\/strong>, which dates back to the 12th century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Via Giovanni Capellini<\/strong> is the main street crossing <strong>Portovenere\u2019s historic centre<\/strong> and it is a <strong>caruggio<\/strong>, the <strong>narrow street typical of Ligurian villages<\/strong>. In it you find <strong>artisanal<\/strong>, <strong>souvenir<\/strong> and <strong>food shops<\/strong>. Then, on its sides there are little squares, stairways and tiny passageways.<\/p>\n<p>An <strong>urban landscape full of colours and charme<\/strong>.
