Genoa<\/strong> is a lesser-known travel destination<\/strong> in Italy<\/strong>, especially if compared to other cities such as Milan, Venice, Florence or Rome. The capital of region of Liguria<\/strong> is located on the Gulf of Genoa in the Ligurian Sea and it has been one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean<\/strong>. The city is also known as \u201cla Superba<\/em>\u201d due to its glorious past and impressive landmarks. Indeed, the ancient Republic of Genoa<\/strong> was established in 1005 and remained autonomous until 1797.<\/p>\n

The Ligurian capital is the birthplace<\/strong> of Christopher Columbus<\/strong> (though his early life is somewhat obscure as some historians believe he was actually born in Cogoleto<\/em>), Andrea Doria<\/strong>, Goffredo Mameli <\/strong>(the author of the lyrics of the national anthem of Italy), Niccol\u00f2 Paganini<\/strong>, Giuseppe Mazzini<\/strong>, Eugenio Montale<\/strong>, Fabrizio de Andr\u00e9<\/strong> and Renzo Piano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In this article you find a list of things to do in Genoa<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> in order to discover its historical<\/strong>, cultural<\/strong>, artistic <\/strong>and natural heritage<\/strong>. For this reason I recommend you to spend at least a couple of days in town<\/strong>. Besides that you should consider exploring its surroundings<\/strong>, for example several destinations I have pointed out in this specific article<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>. At the end of the page I have added some information about how to get there<\/strong> and around<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1. Explore one of the most extended medieval historic centre of Europe<\/span><\/h3>\n

This area of 113 hectares is made up of narrow alleys<\/strong> (caruggi<\/em>) and small hidden squares <\/strong>with churches<\/strong>, noble palaces<\/strong> and local historic shops<\/strong> (botteghe storiche<\/em>) that have been open to the public for more than 100 years. The best way to discover the Genoese Historic Centre<\/strong> is by foot<\/strong>, getting the chance to know languages, cultures, smells and flavours that have always been mixing together.<\/p>\n

Some of the streets<\/strong> are named after old artisanal activities and corporations<\/strong>, others welcome splendid residences <\/strong>built by rich merchants and nobles in which works of art <\/strong>were collected for centuries. Many beautiful palaces were erected in Strada Nuova<\/strong> (today via Garibaldi<\/em>) during the Renaissance. There you can see stunning facades decorated with gilded stucco, frescoes and marbles, as well as private gardens with fountains and nymphaeums. The interiors feature art collections, frescoed rooms and sumptuous furniture.<\/p>\n

This revolutionary urban development<\/strong> then became a housing model for all European aristocrats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1576 <\/strong>most of these luxurious residences<\/strong> were included in a list called Rolli<\/strong> related to a particular accomodation system<\/strong> in which owners had to host guests during their state visits. Among the 100 existing ones, 42 Palazzi dei Rolli<\/strong> and Genoa Historic Centre <\/strong>were declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2006<\/strong>. These buildings can be found in Strada Nuova<\/em> and across the entire city centre. Some of them still belong to private owners, others are banks\u2019 or offices\u2019 headquarters and many are museums<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rolli Days<\/strong> is an event that takes place two weekends a year \u2013 normally in May and October – during which these palaces are opened to the public.<\/p>\n

Via Garibaldi and surroundings are included in guided walking tours<\/strong> that allow visitors to see the main places of interest <\/strong>of Genoa\u2019s city centre<\/strong> as well as visiting<\/strong> some of the Palazzi dei Rolli<\/strong>.
