Explore one of the most extended medieval historic centre of Europe<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This area of 113 hectares is made up of <strong>narrow alleys<\/strong> (<em>caruggi<\/em>) and <strong>small hidden squares <\/strong>with <strong>churches<\/strong>, <strong>noble palaces<\/strong> and <strong>local historic shops<\/strong> (<em>botteghe storiche<\/em>) that have been open to the public for more than 100 years. The best way to <strong>discover the Genoese Historic Centre<\/strong> is <strong>by foot<\/strong>, getting the chance to know languages, cultures, smells and flavours that have always been mixing together.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the <strong>streets<\/strong> are named after <strong>old artisanal activities and corporations<\/strong>, others welcome <strong>splendid residences <\/strong>built by rich merchants and nobles in which <strong>works of art <\/strong>were collected for centuries. Many beautiful palaces were erected in <strong>Strada Nuova<\/strong> (today <em>via Garibaldi<\/em>) during the Renaissance. Among the 100 existing ones, <strong>42 Palazzi dei Rolli<\/strong> <strong>and Genoa Historic Centre <\/strong>were declared <strong>UNESCO World Heritage in 2006<\/strong>. These buildings can be found in <em>Strada Nuova<\/em> and across the entire city centre. There is also a <strong>recreational and interactive museum for children <\/strong>called <em>Citt\u00e0 dei Bambini<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>isola delle Chiatte<\/strong> is a \u201cfloating square\u201d where Genoese come to relax while enjoying <strong>stunning views of the city<\/strong>, including the iconic <em>Lanterna<\/em> as well as the <strong>Apennines<\/strong> that surround the Ligurian Capital. <strong>Bigo<\/strong> is a very <strong>popular attraction <\/strong>for those who want to <strong>admire Genoa at 360 degree<\/strong>. Indeed it is a <strong>panoramic lift 40 meters above the sea<\/strong> and its shape recalls the old manual loading cranes.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, the <strong>Aquarium of Genoa<\/strong> is undoubtedly the <strong>most visited attraction<\/strong>. Inaugurated in 1992, it is the <strong>largest exhibition of aquatic biodiversity in Europe<\/strong>, having 70 tanks housing <strong>more than 12.000 animals of 600 different species<\/strong> like dolphins, sharks, penguins, seals and tropical fish as well.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>complete visit<\/strong> takes around <strong>3 hours<\/strong> and I recommend you to <strong>buy your tickets online<\/strong> in order to <strong>skip the queue at the entrance<\/strong>. Walk up to the Lanterna<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Lanterna di Genoa<\/strong> is the <strong>second highest lighthouse in the world<\/strong> and the <strong>first one in the Mediterranean<\/strong>. It is the <strong>symbol of the city<\/strong> and it stands on a 40-metre-high rock, so the total height is <strong>117 meters above the sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It was rebuilt in 1543 at the eastern end of <strong>Sampierdarena<\/strong>, the major port and industrial area of the city. Today a <strong>800-meters-pedestrian path connects the building to the Ferry Terminal<\/strong> along part of the old defensive walls.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors can explore the <strong>museum <\/strong>dedicated to the history, culture, art and traditions of the city through the words of ordinary people. Then, you can climb <strong>172 stairs<\/strong> to get to the <strong>panoramic terrace<\/strong> offering amazing views of the harbour and the old town. Discover noble palaces near the city centre<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>These two places &#8211; my favourite ones &#8211; give you a glimpse of Genoa\u2019s glorious past and its artistic treasures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doriapamphilj.it\/genova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>Villa del Principe<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> was commissioned by <strong>Andrea Doria<\/strong> in 1521 and then it was completed by his heir Giovanni Andrea a century later. It is situated outside the city walls (near the railway station) and for this reason it was not included in the <em>Palazzi dei Rolli<\/em>. Despite this, <strong>it was the \u201cRoyal Palace\u201d of the Republic of Genoa<\/strong> and it welcomed famous people like Napoleone, King Vittorio Emanuele II and Giuseppe Verdi.<\/p>\n<p>The property is still owned by the Doria-Phampili family and it has been recently restored. In the <strong>interiors<\/strong> you can see beautiful <strong>frescoes<\/strong>, <strong>wooden furnishings<\/strong> and a <strong>series of tapestries<\/strong> depicting the <strong>Battle of Lepanto<\/strong> in 1571. The <strong>gardens<\/strong> outside once stretched out to the sea, with the magnificent fountain of Neptune at the centre and still visible today.<\/p>\n<p>Villa del Principe is free for <strong>Genova Museum Card<\/strong> holders, a tourist pass which includes several attractions across the city together with a free public transport option. Walk up along the City Walls<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Parco delle Mura<\/strong> (<em>Park of the City Walls<\/em>) is a Protected Natural Area of 617 hectares of hills that surrounds Genoa. It is named after the <strong>New Walls<\/strong> erected in the 17th century to protect the city and its harbour. Besides them, the area includes many <strong>military forts<\/strong> built betweeen 17th-19th centuries. There are different <strong>itineraries to follow<\/strong>, each of them runs through meadows, woods, pastures and remains of the area\u2019s sheep-farming past.<\/p>\n<p>The most popular destinations are <strong>Forte Diamante<\/strong>, the Park&#8217;s highest and most isolated fort (660 metres above sea level), <strong>Forte Begato<\/strong>, overlooking Polcevera Valley, <strong>Fratello Maggiore<\/strong> and <strong>Minore<\/strong>, <strong>Puin<\/strong>, <strong>Sperone <\/strong>and <strong>Tenaglie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of paths presents no or almost not particular difficulty, anyway a minimal amount of training is required. Then, <strong>Genova Quarto al mare<\/strong> is famous because it is from where the <strong>expedition of the Thousand<\/strong> led by <strong>Garibaldi<\/strong> sailed in the night of 5 May 1860. You can see the rock with a commemorative monument. After that, you should taste the <em>Ligurian Rabbit<\/em>, <em>cima<\/em>, <em>stuffed vegetables<\/em>, <em>farinata<\/em> and <em>panissa<\/em>. Then, <em>stoccafisso accomodato<\/em> and <em>cappon magro<\/em> as <strong>sea specialities<\/strong>.
