Located in the Central Lowlands of Scotland<\/strong>, Falkirk <\/strong>lies in the Forth Valley<\/strong> and midway between Edinburgh <\/strong>(37,5 Km) and Glasgow <\/strong>(33 Km). The area is steeped in history, it boasts a relevant cultural, natural and engineering heritage<\/strong> that attracts an increasing number of visitors from all over the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In addition to that, the city has en excellent motorway and rail links<\/strong> and the two international airports <\/strong>in Edinburgh and Glasgow are well reachable<\/strong> by train or bus<\/strong>. Further information are available<\/em><\/strong> here<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019re many accomodations<\/strong> throughout the area, in my case I stayed in two different hotels: the Macdonald Inchyra Hotel & Spa<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Polmont <\/strong>(4 miles from the town centre) and the Leapark Hotel<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Grangemouth<\/strong>, ideally located on the way to Bo\u2019ness.<\/p>\n

The top 6 attractions to visit in Falkirk Area<\/span><\/h2>\n

Today, this destination is mainly famous for 2 of the world\u2019s most unique attractions<\/strong>: the Falkirk Wheel<\/strong> and The Kelpies<\/strong>. However, you can also find historical dwellings<\/strong> as well as other places of interest<\/strong> related to the Scottish history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Most of the attractions<\/strong> are situated<\/strong> outside Falkirk town centre<\/strong> but frequent bus services operated by First Bus<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> and leaving from Newmarket Street <\/em>allow tourists to easily reach them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. The Kelpies at Helix Park<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Kelpies<\/strong> is the world\u2019s largest equine sculpture <\/strong>and it\u2019s one of Scotland\u2019s top attractions<\/strong>. They were designed in 2013<\/strong> by<\/strong> sculptor Andy Scott<\/strong>, each structure measures around 30 m<\/strong> in height, it\u2019s made of 464 steel plates and its weigh is over 300 tonnes. The 30-minute guided walking tour<\/strong> is the only way to get inside the monument to discover its history and engineering.<\/p>\n

Though they look like beautiful and harmless horses, actually they represent some shape-shifting water spirits <\/strong>that \u2013 according to Celtic tradition \u2013 inhabit lochs and pools of the country.<\/p>\n

The Kelpies are located in the heart of Helix Park<\/strong>, towering over the Forth & Clyde Canal<\/strong> at its entrance point on the east coast of Scotland. The area is a new 350 hectares of green land with a play park<\/strong>, a lagoon for water sports<\/strong>, many cycling and walking paths<\/strong> and a Visitor Centre <\/strong>that includes a cafe\/gift shop and an exhibition space. The Helix Car Park<\/strong> has access 24\/7 and it\u2019s free of charge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Kelpies are approximately 2 miles away from Falkirk town centre<\/strong> and the best way to get there is by bus<\/strong> (services n. 2 and 4).<\/p>\n

2. The Falkirk Wheel and Rough Castle<\/span><\/h3>\n

Another symbol of this area is the Falkirk Wheel<\/strong>, the world\u2019s only rotating boat lift connecting<\/strong> the Forth & Clide Canal <\/strong>from Glasgow with the Union Canal<\/strong> running from Edinburgh. Opened in 2002 <\/strong>by Queen Elizabeth, this magnificent structure is considered Scotland\u2019s most exciting example of 21st century engineering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Falkirk Wheel<\/strong> is the perfect destination for a family day out<\/strong> with play areas<\/strong>, boat trips<\/strong>, woodland walks<\/strong>, many events<\/strong> throughout the year while cafe and quality foods are served in the Visitor Centre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Falkirk Wheel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Local trails \u2013 both for cyclists<\/strong> and walkers<\/strong> – follow the path of the Antonine Wall<\/strong>, the north-western frontier of the Roman Empire<\/strong>. It was built around AD142 <\/strong>and it stretched across Scotland<\/strong>, from west to east. It\u2019s a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> since 2005 and luckily some of its best sections are visible around Falkirk Area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For example, with a 20-25 minute walk from the Wheels<\/strong> it\u2019s possible to reach Rough Castle<\/strong>, the second-smallest fort on the wall<\/strong> but the one in the best state of preservation<\/strong>. Once there it\u2019s possible to see the tallest surviving section of rampart, a part of the Military Way along the wall, ditches and gateways as well as fort and other defences.<\/p>\n

Getting to Falkirk Wheel and Rough Castle from the town centre<\/strong> is very easy and convenient. Journey time is about 20 minutes, bus services 1 & 6<\/strong> operated by First Bus<\/em> stop in front of the Visitor Centre.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

3. The Battle of Falkirk Muir Trail<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

This battle was fought on the afternoon of 17th January 1746<\/strong> on the grounds that today are part of Callendar Estate<\/strong>. It involved more men than any other combat during the<\/strong> 1745 Jacobite uprising<\/strong> \u2013 approx. 8000 units on each side \u2013 but it only lasted about half an hour.<\/p>\n

It also was the last significant Jacobite success<\/strong> before their final defeat at Culloden Moor<\/em> in April 1746. Indeed, Bonnie Prince Charlie\u2019s army was unable to capitalise on that victory<\/strong> as the Government forces managed to withdraw to Edinburgh without considerable loss. On the other side, the jacobites failed to conquer Stirling Castle and then retreated into the Highlands.<\/p>\n

The Battle of Falkirk Trail <\/strong>is a 4 Km free guided walk<\/strong> through history. Several information boards <\/strong>outline the key places as well as the main events of that day. For example, Charlie\u2019s Hill<\/strong> is the vantage point from where Bonnie Prince Charlie \u2013 also known as the Young Pretender<\/em> \u2013 was able to check how the battle was fought and then to give useful information to his army.<\/p>\n

The Battle of Falkirk Monument <\/strong> was erected in 1927 on the site where Lord George Murray<\/strong> ordered his regiments to march south to north to form the front line of the Jacobite army. Then, the itinerary continues across the terrain where Lord George Murray\u2019s army<\/strong> and the Governative dragoons clashed. Jacobites had less military experience but definitely a better knowledge of the area so that allowed them to beat the Hanoverian troops back.<\/p>\n

There\u2019re many access to the trail. My personal recommendation is from the starting point <\/strong>at the Cafe at Canada Wood<\/strong>. You can reach it from Falkirk town centre<\/strong> by bus, taking the no. 6 \u2013 the same one headed to the Wheel \u2013 and getting off at Tamfourhill<\/strong>, on Carradale Avenue<\/em>. Once there it takes a 25-30 minute walk across the woodland to the Cafe.<\/p>\n

4. Callendar House and Park<\/span><\/h3>\n

The palace is located near<\/strong> Falkirk town centre<\/strong>, surrounded by a wonderful park<\/strong> featuring a children play area<\/strong>, picnic tables, snacks kiosk, golf course<\/strong> and waymarked trails<\/strong>. Besides that, the Estate also contains a section of the Roman Antonine Wall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Callendar House<\/strong> is a French chateau styled building which dates back to 14th century. Historical figures such as Mary Queen of Scots<\/strong>, Cromwell <\/strong>and Bonnie Prince Charlie<\/strong> stayed here.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, private rooms are not open to public. Anyway, the house hosts contemporary visual art exhibitions<\/strong>, a Tearoom <\/strong>overlooking the park and a museum<\/strong> dedicated to the history of Falkirk Area<\/strong> from 11to the 19th centuries<\/strong>. Having said that, the restored 1825 Kitchen<\/strong> with costumed interpreters providing samples of food of that time is the main tourist attraction<\/strong>. Especially since then it was used as a film location for the Outlander Tv Series<\/strong>. The Georgian Kitchen<\/em> appears as Duke of Sandringham\u2019s house<\/strong> in the 11th episode of season 2, \u201cVengeance is Mine<\/strong>\u201d, in the scene in which Murtagh decapitates the English Duke.<\/p>\n

5. Falkirk Town Heritage Trail<\/span><\/h3>\n

There\u2019re two free guided walks <\/strong>across the town centre that allow to discover the history of Falkirk<\/strong>. Both tours last around one hour and depart from the Steeple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The current bell tower was erected in 1814 and it has been used in many ways over the years. The first steeple was built between 16th-17th centuries, the second one was then demolished in 1803. The building has always been a local landmark<\/strong> and a vital part of town life and community identity and still it is today.<\/p>\n

Few metres away from the Steeple, the Howgate Shopping Centre <\/strong>is another suggested stop along the trail. Indeed, the stained glass windows<\/strong> that were made in 1860 to commemorate the Jacobite success at the battle of Falkirk<\/strong> are on display on its lower floor. They come from South Bantaskine House<\/strong> \u2013 not far from Falkirk battlefield \u2013 representing Bonnie Prince Charlie<\/strong> in the centre, Lord George Murray<\/strong> on his right and Lord John Drummond<\/strong> on his left.<\/p>\n

Another place of interest is the Falkirk Trinity Church<\/strong>, built in 1811 on the ground where the first church was erected between the 7th-11th centuries. From its name, Faw Kirk<\/strong>, would derive the name of the town<\/strong>. In the graveyard<\/strong> there\u2019re memorials dedicated to Scottish figures<\/strong>. For example Sir John de Graeme<\/strong>, who fought alongside William Wallace<\/strong> and died during the Battle of Falkirk in July 1298. According to the legend, it was the scottish hero himself who buried his friend here.<\/p>\n

The area also offers plenty of choice for places where to eat<\/strong>. I can recommend you The Finnegans<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, offering quality and affordable breakfasts<\/strong>, sandwiches<\/strong>, bakings<\/strong>, lunches <\/strong>and coffee; and Behind The Wall<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, serving Scottish and international food<\/strong> \u2013 including the delicious pizza pad<\/strong> \u2013 together with a wide range of whisky brands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

6. A day out in Bo\u2019ness<\/span><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s managed by volunteers, it\u2019s open weekends from April to October<\/strong> and midweek days <\/strong>during school holidays<\/strong>. Special events<\/strong> for families with children <\/strong>take place across the year, for example the Santa Train <\/em>in December.<\/p>\n

Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway Station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Bo\u2019ness Railway Station<\/strong> appeared as a film location in Outlander Tv Series <\/strong>in the third episode of Season 1, when Frank and Claire say their goodbye at the London railway station before leaving for the II World War. Whilst here I recommend a visit of the Museum of Scottish Railway<\/strong>, the Scotland\u2019s largest railway museum <\/strong>in which full size locomotives and old fashioned railway signs are on display.<\/p>\n

Designed by architect Matthew Steele and opened in 1912<\/strong> in the centre of Bo\u2019ness<\/strong>, The Hippodrome<\/strong> is Scotland\u2019s oldest purpose-built cinema<\/strong>. This beautiful pre-art deco picture palace has been accurately restored in the last years. Today it screens the latest releases<\/strong>, classic films<\/strong>, autistic friendly viewings<\/strong> and films for children<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n

\"Day<\/a>
The Hippodrome<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Each March the Hippodrome is home of the Silent Film Festival<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/em>. A long weekend of film gems including silent-era, talks about early cinema pioneers and world-class live music.<\/p>\n

The last stop of the itinerary in Bo\u2019ness is at Kinneil Estate<\/strong>, an area packed with history as visitors can see a section of the Antonine Wall <\/strong>and its fort as well as some remains of the medieval church of the old village.<\/p>\n

Located in the heart of the park, Kinneil House<\/strong> is a stunning historic country residence and property of the<\/strong> Dukes of Hamilton from 1323 to 1922<\/strong>. It\u2019s open on selected days throughout the year and visits are available just with guided tour<\/strong>. These allow to discover the fascinating story of the estate and to enjoy the beautiful Renaissance wall paintings<\/strong>, considered the best in Scotland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Kinneill Museum<\/strong> hosts an exhibition focused on the 2.000 years of history<\/strong> of the area<\/strong>, from Roman times to the present day. Antoninus Pius<\/strong>, Mary Queen of Scots<\/strong> and James Watt<\/strong> are some of the historical characters that visited Kinneill. Speaking of the Scottish inventor<\/strong>, the workshop where he worked to the development of the steam engine<\/strong> is still visibile next to the House.<\/p>\n

I spent a whole day exploring this village that overlooks the Firth of Forth<\/strong> and located 12 Km far from Falkirk<\/strong>. Its main attraction<\/strong> is the Bo\u2019ness & Kinneil Railway Station<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, a heritage railway in which visitors have the chance to board a vintage steam<\/strong> or diesel-hauled train<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
