The area is steeped in history, it boasts a <strong>relevant cultural, natural and engineering heritage<\/strong> that attracts an <strong>increasing number of visitors from all over the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to that, the city has en <strong>excellent motorway and rail links<\/strong> and the two <strong>international airports <\/strong>in Edinburgh and Glasgow are <strong>well reachable<\/strong> <strong>by train or bus<\/strong>. Further information are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitfalkirk.com\/plan-your-visit\/getting-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>available<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>here<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019re many <strong>accomodations<\/strong> throughout the area, in my case I stayed in two different hotels: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/gb\/inchyra.en.html?aid=1139242&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Macdonald Inchyra Hotel &amp; Spa<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> in <strong>Polmont <\/strong>(4 miles from the town centre) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/gb\/leaparkhotel.en.html?aid=1139242&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Leapark Hotel<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> in <strong>Grangemouth<\/strong>, ideally located on the way to Bo\u2019ness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The top 6 attractions to visit in Falkirk Area<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Today, this destination <strong>is mainly famous for 2 of the world\u2019s most unique attractions<\/strong>: the <strong>Falkirk Wheel<\/strong> and <strong>The Kelpies<\/strong>. However, you can also find <strong>historical dwellings<\/strong> as well as other <strong>places of interest<\/strong> related to the <strong>Scottish history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most of the attractions<\/strong> are <strong>situated<\/strong> <strong>outside Falkirk town centre<\/strong> but frequent bus services operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstgroup.com\/south-east-and-central-scotland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>First Bus<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> and leaving from <em>Newmarket Street <\/em>allow tourists to easily reach them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1. The Kelpies at Helix Park<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Kelpies<\/strong> is the <strong>world\u2019s largest equine sculpture <\/strong>and it\u2019s <strong>one of Scotland\u2019s top attractions<\/strong>. They were <strong>designed in 2013<\/strong> <strong>by<\/strong> sculptor <strong>Andy Scott<\/strong>, each structure measures around <strong>30 m<\/strong> in height, it\u2019s made of 464 steel plates and its weigh is over 300 tonnes. The<strong> 30-minute guided walking tour<\/strong> is the only way to get inside the monument to discover its history and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Though they look like beautiful and harmless horses, actually <strong>they represent some shape-shifting water spirits <\/strong>that \u2013 according to Celtic tradition \u2013 inhabit lochs and pools of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Kelpies are <strong>located in the heart of Helix Park<\/strong>, towering over the <strong>Forth &amp; Clyde Canal<\/strong> at its entrance point on the east coast of Scotland. The area is a new 350 hectares of green land with a <strong>play park<\/strong>, a <strong>lagoon for water sports<\/strong>, many <strong>cycling and walking paths<\/strong> and a <strong>Visitor Centre <\/strong>that includes a cafe\/gift shop and an exhibition space. It was <strong>built around AD142 <\/strong>and <strong>it stretched across Scotland<\/strong>, from west to east. It\u2019s a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> since 2005 and luckily some of its <strong>best sections are visible around Falkirk Area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, with a <strong>20-25 minute walk from the Wheels<\/strong> it\u2019s possible to reach <strong>Rough Castle<\/strong>, the <strong>second-smallest fort on the wall<\/strong> <strong>but the one in the best state of preservation<\/strong>. Journey time is about 20 minutes, <strong>bus services 1 &amp; 6<\/strong> operated by <em>First Bus<\/em> stop in front of the Visitor Centre.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>3. The Battle of Falkirk Muir Trail<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This battle was fought on the afternoon of <strong>17th January 1746<\/strong> on the grounds that today are part of <strong>Callendar Estate<\/strong>. <strong>It involved more men than any other combat during the<\/strong> <strong>1745 Jacobite uprising<\/strong> \u2013 approx. 8000 units on each side \u2013 but it only lasted about half an hour.<\/p>\n<p>It also was the <strong>last significant Jacobite success<\/strong> before their final defeat at <em>Culloden Moor<\/em> in April 1746. Indeed, <strong>Bonnie Prince Charlie\u2019s army was unable to capitalise on that victory<\/strong> as the Government forces managed to withdraw to Edinburgh without considerable loss. On the other side, the jacobites failed to conquer Stirling Castle and then retreated into the Highlands.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Battle of Falkirk Trail <\/strong>is a <strong>4 Km free guided walk<\/strong> through history. Several <strong>information boards <\/strong>outline the key places as well as the main events of that day. Then, the itinerary continues across the terrain where <strong>Lord George Murray\u2019s army<\/strong> and the Governative dragoons clashed. My personal recommendation is from the <strong>starting point <\/strong>at the <strong>Cafe at Canada Wood<\/strong>. You can <strong>reach it from Falkirk town centre<\/strong> by bus, taking the no. 6 \u2013 the same one headed to the Wheel \u2013 and getting off at <strong>Tamfourhill<\/strong>, on <em>Carradale Avenue<\/em>. Once there it takes a 25-30 minute walk across the woodland to the Cafe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4. Callendar House and Park<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The palace is located <strong>near<\/strong> <strong>Falkirk town centre<\/strong>, surrounded by a wonderful <strong>park<\/strong> featuring a <strong>children play area<\/strong>, picnic tables, snacks kiosk, <strong>golf course<\/strong> and <strong>waymarked trails<\/strong>. Besides that, the Estate also contains a <strong>section of the Roman Antonine Wall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Callendar House<\/strong> is a French chateau styled building which dates back to 14th century. Anyway, the house hosts <strong>contemporary visual art exhibitions<\/strong>, a <strong>Tearoom <\/strong>overlooking the park and a <strong>museum<\/strong> dedicated to the <strong>history of Falkirk Area<\/strong> <strong>from 11to the 19th centuries<\/strong>. Having said that, the <strong>restored 1825 Kitchen<\/strong> with costumed interpreters providing samples of food of that time is the <strong>main tourist attraction<\/strong>. Especially since then it was used as a <strong>film location for the Outlander Tv Series<\/strong>. Falkirk Town Heritage Trail<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019re <strong>two free guided walks <\/strong>across the town centre that allow to discover the <strong>history of Falkirk<\/strong>. Both tours last around one hour and depart from <strong>the Steeple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The current bell tower was erected in 1814 and it has been used in many ways over the years. The first steeple was built between 16th-17th centuries, the second one was then demolished in 1803. Indeed, the <strong>stained glass windows<\/strong> that were <strong>made in 1860 to commemorate the Jacobite success at the battle of Falkirk<\/strong> are on display on its lower floor. From its name, <strong>Faw Kirk<\/strong>, <strong>would derive the name of the town<\/strong>. In the <strong>graveyard<\/strong> there\u2019re memorials dedicated to <strong>Scottish figures<\/strong>. For example <strong>Sir John de Graeme<\/strong>, who <strong>fought alongside William Wallace<\/strong> and died during the Battle of Falkirk in July 1298. A day out in Bo\u2019ness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I spent a whole day exploring this village that overlooks the <strong>Firth of Forth<\/strong> and located <strong>12 Km far from Falkirk<\/strong>. Its <strong>main attraction<\/strong> is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkrailway.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Bo\u2019ness &amp; Kinneil Railway Station<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, a heritage railway in which visitors have the chance to board a <strong>vintage steam<\/strong> or <strong>diesel-hauled train<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s managed by volunteers, it\u2019s <strong>open weekends from April to October<\/strong> and <strong>midweek days <\/strong>during <strong>school holidays<\/strong>.
