It\u2019s also <strong>halway between<\/strong> <strong>Edinburgh and Aberdeen<\/strong> and you can <strong>reach it by bus <\/strong>or <strong>by train<\/strong> from many stations throughout UK.<\/p>\n<p>Dundee is known as the \u201c<strong>city of jute, jam and journalism<\/strong>\u201d due to its relevance in these sectors during the 19th century as a consequence of the Industrial Revolution. Today the city is a very popular <strong>hub for innovation and creativity<\/strong> and for its contribution to many fields like medical research, video games and comics it was recognised as <strong>UNESCO City of Design<\/strong> in 2014, the first in all United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What to do and see in Dundee in two days<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The main reason that brought me here was to visit the new <strong>V&amp;A Dundee<\/strong>, the <strong>world\u2019s only museum outside of London<\/strong>. Anyway, I had the chance to plan an itinerary that allowed to explore different areas of the city to find out more about its <strong>history <\/strong>and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Dundee is not very big so it\u2019s quite easy to get to most places on foot. Otherwise, you can use the <strong>local bus services<\/strong> operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/nxbus.co.uk\/dundee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Xplore Dundee<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> to move around including <a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/things-to-do-broughty-ferry-dundee-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Broughty Ferry<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Law, the city centre and the McManus Art Gallery and Museum<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The tour starts from <strong>Dundee West End<\/strong> where the <strong>University Campus<\/strong> is settled. Every year more than 17.000 students come here from all over the world, making <strong>Dundee Scotland\u2019s most student-friendly city<\/strong>. The University has a very strong reputation in sectors such as <strong>biosciences research<\/strong>, <strong>art and design<\/strong>, <strong>medicine and dentistry<\/strong>, <strong>engineering<\/strong> and <strong>humanities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Situated in the surrounds of the city centre and along the braes of the Law, <strong>Dudhope Park and Castle<\/strong> is a local beauty that deserves a look. It was used as a military base until 1881, today it hosts offices of the <strong>Dundee City Council<\/strong> and unfortunately it\u2019s not possible to visit inside. The hill is 174 m high and at the top of it there\u2019s a <strong>war memorial<\/strong> built in 1925 for all the people who passed away in both World Wars.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Law<\/em> is an authentic distinctive landmark and also very important for learning more about the origin and development of the city. Indeed, many archaeological evidences tell that the area was inhabited since 3.500 years ago, by the <strong>Picts<\/strong> and then by the <strong>Romans<\/strong> too. The first stop is in the <strong>City Square<\/strong>, the main square where there\u2019re the <strong>Town Hall<\/strong> and the <strong>Caird Hall<\/strong>. This bulding dates back to early 20th century and it\u2019s an important venue for concerts and other kind of events like graduation ceremonies from the local University.<\/p>\n<p>Opposite to the square, the <strong>Desperate Dan Statue<\/strong> is <strong>a symbol of<\/strong> <strong>Dundee<\/strong> as it\u2019s one of the characters of the British comic book \u201c<strong>The Dandy<\/strong>\u201d, issued by the local publishing company <strong>DC Thomson<\/strong> between 1937 and 2013. This is one of the oldest examples of the original <strong>Dundee Horse Drawn Tram <\/strong>still existing nowadays. For example, <strong>the oldest astrolabe in the world<\/strong> used by sailors to calculate the angle of the sun or a star on the horizon. One of the largest objects showcased at McManus is the skeleton of a <strong>whale <\/strong>caught in the <strong>River Tay<\/strong> at the end of the 19th century. It\u2019s symbol of Dundee\u2019s whaling past and its relevance for the economy of the city. Then, you can see <strong>one of only two Jacobite flags<\/strong> survived after the <a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/what-to-see-weekend-escape-inverness-highlands-scotland\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>battle of Culloden<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> in 1746. This belonged to the Angus regiment under Lord Ogilvy. All the other flags were confiscated by Hanoverian forces and carried to Edinburgh to be burned.<\/p>\n<p>Inside there\u2019re also a retail area and a cafe. The area is at the heart of investments to redevelop it and transform the city in a world leading destination for both businesses and tourists.<\/p>\n<p>The first visible results are the renovated <strong>Rail Station<\/strong>, with platforms located below sea level, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/gb\/sleeperz-dundee.en.html?aid=1139242&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Sleeperz Hotel<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> opened in July 2018. Having said that, the turning point was the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/dundee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>V&amp;A Dundee<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the <strong>Scotland\u2019s first design museum<\/strong> and the only other V&amp;A museum opened in the world outside London.<\/p>\n<p>The building was <strong>designed by<\/strong> the Japanese architect <strong>Kengo Kuma<\/strong>, who is designing the stadium for the <strong>Tokyo 2020 Olympics<\/strong> too. His aim was to create a space enjoyable for everyone, where people can meet up and spend some time together exploring the new Waterfront. The structure consists of curving concrete walls that hold 2.500 pre-cast rough stone panels recreating the shape of a <strong>Scottish cliff face<\/strong>. In the <em>Scottish Design Galleries<\/em> you can see the <strong>Mackintosh\u2019s Oak Room<\/strong>, the<strong> largest tearoom interior designed by him<\/strong>. He created this masterpiece in 1907-1908 for Mrs Cranston\u2019s Glasgow tearoom and it remained in use until 1971. Then, it was dismantled after the tearoom closed. Finally it has been restored \u2013 the process lasted many years &#8211; and now it\u2019s beautifully displayed here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Admission to V&amp;A Dundee is free<\/strong>, apart from some temporary exhibitions. The ship was built here in 1900 and then launched the following year. Indeed, the aim of this project is to bring <strong>street art<\/strong> in places where normally people don\u2019t go. It\u2019s located in a tranquill residential area close to the <strong>city centre<\/strong> and well connected to it <strong>by bus<\/strong> (services 32-33 operated by <strong>Xplore Dundee<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The house was built in 1902 and named after <strong>Princess Louise Caroline Alberta<\/strong>, the sixth child of Queen Victoria. As wife of the Duke of Argyll she had to travel to Ottawa when he became Givernor General of Canada. During her stay, she was appreciated by local people for her deep interest in <strong>arts<\/strong> and <strong>support of Suffragette Movement<\/strong>. That\u2019s the reason why areas like the province of Alberta and Lake Louise are named after her.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret and Ariel are the owners of <em>Alberta Guest House<\/em> since September 2015.
