I reached it by train, the <strong>railway station<\/strong> is located close to the old harbour and the Abbey as well.<\/p>\n<p>One day was enough for me to see the local <strong>main places of interest<\/strong>, including a short excursion along the <strong>coastal path<\/strong> <strong>to Auchmithie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What to do in Arbroath in 24 hours<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Arbroath is famous for <\/strong>the <strong>Abbey<\/strong> and for the \u201c<strong>smokie<\/strong>\u201d. Apart from that, the local <strong>coastline<\/strong> offers <strong>stunning views<\/strong> across the <strong>North Sea<\/strong> so it\u2019s definitely something you shouldn\u2019t miss. The<strong> attractions<\/strong> are all situated <strong>within a walking distance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The itinerary starts from the <strong>ruins of<\/strong> <strong>Arbroath Abbey<\/strong>, <strong>founded by William I in 1178<\/strong> in order to expand his authority in that area and also to commemorate his childhood friend Thomas Becket, the Archbishop killed in Canterbury Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>William I was the first King to be buried here as until that moment the Scottish monarchs had been laid to rest in <a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/what-to-see-dunfermline-fife-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Dundermline Abbey<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/arbroath-abbey-ruins-historic-scotland.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16083\" src=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/arbroath-abbey-ruins-historic-scotland.jpg\" alt=\"What to see in Arbroath: the Abbey | Check-in Travel Blog\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/arbroath-abbey-ruins-historic-scotland.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/arbroath-abbey-ruins-historic-scotland-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/arbroath-abbey-ruins-historic-scotland-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Having said that, the Abbey is well known for being the place from where the <strong>Declaration of Arbroath<\/strong> was sent to Pope John XXII. Considered as the <strong>most famous document in the history of Scotland<\/strong>, this letter was written in 1320 by many Scottish barons, nobles and freemen to assert the <strong>independence from England<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;As long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours, that we are fighting, but for freedom &#8211; for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>The building fell into ruin after the Reformation. Then, the <strong>Stone of Destiny <\/strong>was left here in 1951, 3 months after it was stolen from Westminster Abbey. This is the starting point of the <strong>coastal walk<\/strong> <strong>to Auchmithie<\/strong>, a very small village and original home of the <strong>Arbroath Smokie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The path explores the <strong>Seaton Cliffs<\/strong>, an amazing natural area made of red sandstone formations including arches, stacks, sandy beaches and sea caves. The ones impressed me most are <strong>The Deil\u2019s Heid<\/strong>, a sea stack resulting from the joint action of waves and debris carried by the water, and <strong>The Needle E\u2019e<\/strong>, the remains of a collapsed sea cave with an arch that looks like a &#8220;window overlooking the sea&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Also, there\u2019re few benches along the way from where you can enjoy the scenery and see how the coastline has been shaped by the <strong>erosive power of the wind and sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Consider at least 2 hours to reach the village as the distance is about 8 Km (5 miles). The local landmark is the <strong>Arbroath Signal Tower Museum<\/strong>, easily recognizable for the tower built in 1813. The museum tells us more about the maritime history of the Scottish town as well as the importance of the <strong>Bell Rock Lighthouse<\/strong> located around 18 Km to the south east to warn sailors entering the <strong>Firth of Tay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the area there\u2019re many <strong>pubs and restaurants<\/strong> \u2013 like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oldbrewhousearbroath.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>The Old Brewhouse<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8211; where it\u2019s possible to try the world famous <strong>Arbroath Smokie<\/strong>. In the first case the trip takes almost one hour and a single ticket costs \u00a34.50.
