Apart from being an ideal base for exploring the area, Ayr is packed with historical and cultural landmarks as well as beautiful landscapes to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>In this article I take you with me to discover this lovely town with a <strong>walking itinerary<\/strong> across <strong>Ayr City Centre<\/strong>. Then, I\u2019ve also attached for you some useful information about accomodation and how to get there. Indeed, a <strong>full day in town<\/strong> allows to see the <strong>main places of interest<\/strong>, all located within a walking distance from the bus and railway stations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Exploring Ayr\u2019s town centre<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It overlooks the mouth of River Ayr and this is crossed by two bridges, the old and the new ones.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Auld Brig of Ayr<\/strong> was already mentioned in a document from 1236 and, according to a local legend, it was founded by two maiden sisters, one of whom had seen her lover drown while fording the river.<\/p>\n<p>Centuries later, when it became too old to sustain the traffic of carts and sledges, a <strong>new bridge <\/strong>was absolutely necessary. Indeed, there\u2019s an argument between the two bridges during which the old one predicts that it\u2019ll stand long after the new bridge has collapsed. As a matter of fact, in 1789 it had to be demolished due to a sever storm and then rebuilt.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Auld Kirk of Ayr<\/strong> and its cementery stand not far from the Auld Brig. It was built in 1654 as the Cromwell\u2019s army requisitioned the local church. <strong>Robert Burns<\/strong> was baptised here. Besides that, there\u2019s also a couple of interesting buildings that tell us more about the history of the town and Scotland as well.<\/p>\n<p>Walking across the High Street you see the <strong>William Wallace Tower<\/strong>, built in honour of the Scottish hero <strong>born in Ayrshire<\/strong>. It opened in 1749 and it became famous for being mentioned in <strong>Burn\u2019s poem <\/strong>\u201c<strong>Tam O\u2019Shanter<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Boat Vennel, situated almost on the opposite site of High St stands the <strong>Loudoun Hall<\/strong>. The build dates back to the late 1400\u2019s and for this reason it\u2019s <strong>one of the oldest building in Ayr<\/strong>. It\u2019s said that in 1563 <strong>Mary Queen of Scots<\/strong> spent here a couple of nights. Anyway, after his death in 1660 the monarchy was restored so the <strong>Cromwellian Citadel<\/strong> was demilitarised.<\/p>\n<p>A few steps away from the military fort, the <strong>St John\u2019s Tower<\/strong> is what remains of the original Church of Ayr built around 1300. Part of the seafront is popular called <strong>the Lang Scots Mile<\/strong>, the misure traditionally adopted in Scotland before the standard English Mile was introduced. The <em>Lang Scots Mile<\/em> was also mentioned by <strong>Robert Burns<\/strong> in his famous poem \u201c<strong>Tam O\u2019Shanter<\/strong>\u201d. The area has been renamed in that way also because it\u2019s located near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/ayr-attractions-c67640\/tickets-for-robert-burns-birthplace-museum-p1008695?partner=sb_check-indistefanobagnasco&amp;tq_campaign=BURNS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>Burn\u2019s birthplace in Alloway<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of my personal highlights of the <a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/4-places-to-visit-in-ayrshire-west-coast-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">trip across Ayrshire<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a> as well as one of the main stops during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/glasgow-l438\/culzean-castle-burns-country-and-the-ayrshire-coast-t12623\/?partner_id=T8F8PZB&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;utm_source=stefano.bagnasco%40hotmail.com&amp;placement=button-cta&amp;cmp=AYRTOR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>this f<\/strong><strong>ull day-tour from Glasgow<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I also had the chance to explore a section of the <strong>Ayrshire Coastal Path<\/strong>, a route that runs along the coastline for 22 miles offering <strong>stunning views <\/strong>across the <strong>Firth of Clyde<\/strong> and the <strong>Isles of Arran and Bute<\/strong>. My itinerary started next to <strong>Greenan Castle<\/strong>, a fortress from the XVII\u00b0 century overlooking the Firth. It\u2019s situated around 3 miles (4,5 Km) south the town centre.<\/p>\n<p>Then I crossed the bridge over the River Doon to get to <strong>Ayr\u2019s Seafront<\/strong>. The area also offers <strong>woodland walks<\/strong>, a <strong>walled garden<\/strong>, two <strong>children\u2019s play areas<\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belleisleconservatory.com\/personal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Belleisle Conservatory<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pay a visit inside where you can observe many species of <strong>plants<\/strong> like tropica, alpine, orchids, carnivorous and cacti. In addition to that it\u2019s possible to see the <strong>bees<\/strong> work in the inner hive. Opened in June 1976, the galleries feature drawings, sculptures, paintings and prints mainly related to the modern period, 1900-1990. Even for this reason my stay was just perfect. The seven bedrooms are named after clans associated with Ayrshire.
