Indeed, you\u2019ll be astonished to find out how many beautiful places it\u2019s possible to see just remaining in town.<\/p>\n<p>Castles, parks, boat trips, wildlife, nature, architectural landmarks\u2026 the <strong>Scottish capital<\/strong> has it all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">6 days out around Edinburgh city centre<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When I\u2019m in town and I <strong>want a break from the chaos<\/strong> of the main streets I just have to walk few minutes and suddenly it seems to be in another place. Indeed, Edinburgh is not as big as other cities\/capitals so it\u2019s quite easy to find an area <strong>where to relax within a walking distance from the centre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason I share with you my favourite <strong>days out in Edinburgh<\/strong>. Most of them are easily reachable <strong>by foot<\/strong>, otherwise you can use the local <strong>public transport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1. Dean Village and Stockbridge<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Often so-called \u201can oasis of calm in the heart of <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong>\u201d, <strong>Dean Village<\/strong> is located just 5-10 minutes away from <strong>Princes Street<\/strong>. It used to be a separate village until 1826 and few years later the impressive <strong>Dean Bridge<\/strong> was added to link the area to the rest of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Another landmark is the <strong>Well Court<\/strong>, built in 1880s to house the local people who worked at the near water mills. Pay also a visit to the <strong>Dean Cemetery<\/strong>, created in 1847 on the site of Dean House (dated back to 1614). Then, not forget the <strong>Dean Gallery<\/strong> and the <strong>Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art<\/strong>, both hosting several exhibitions and many of them have free admission.<\/p>\n<p>To leave the village just follow the walkway along the <strong>Water of Leith<\/strong> so you\u2019ll have the chance to see the the classical temple of <strong>St bernard\u2019s Well<\/strong> and the Dean Bridge, both designed by <strong>Thomas Telford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14941\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/the-top-6-days-out-in-edinburgh-dean-village.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14941\" src=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/the-top-6-days-out-in-edinburgh-dean-village.jpg\" alt=\"Sight of Dean Village in Edinburgh - What to see near the city centre (Scotland)\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/the-top-6-days-out-in-edinburgh-dean-village.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/the-top-6-days-out-in-edinburgh-dean-village-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/the-top-6-days-out-in-edinburgh-dean-village-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean Village<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The beautiful tree-covered path leads to <strong>Stockbridge<\/strong>, another old village that was incorporated in <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong> during the 19th century. Like <em>Dean Village<\/em>, it has kept its own atmosphere and charm.<\/p>\n<p>Explore the area to spot the <strong>Stockbridge Colonies<\/strong>, eleven parallel streets with terraced homes realized between 1861-1911 to house the artisan class. Today, due to their privileged position and the short distance from the city centre, are definitely coveted properties.<\/p>\n<p>The houses are also closed to <strong>Inverleith Park<\/strong>, one of <strong>Scotland\u2019s largest urban parks<\/strong>. Opened in 1891, it&#8217;s the ideal place for walks, picnics, sports, children\u2019s play area and beautiful views of <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong> city centre\u2019s skyline. Adjacent to the park there\u2019re the <strong>Royal Botanic Gardens<\/strong>, previously hosted at St Anne\u2019s Yard near Holyrood Palace since 1670 to 1763. Then, because of the pollution of the Old Town, the collection was moved away. Leith and the Royal Yacht Britannia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At the mouth of the Water of Leith and on the shores of the <strong>Firth of Forth<\/strong>, <strong>Leith <\/strong>used to be the <strong>port of Edinburgh<\/strong> for ages. The route is also suitable for cyclist and thanks to its peacefulness it feels like a world away from the chaos of the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>The new waterfront hosts the <strong>Royal Yacht Britannia<\/strong>, the former floating residence of Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family for over 40 years. Lauriston Castle<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Quite far from the city centre but with easy access by public transport there\u2019s <strong>Lauriston Castle<\/strong>. It\u2019s a 16th century tower house then extended in 1824. Cramond Island<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the <strong>Firth of Forth<\/strong> there\u2019re several islands and one of them is accessible by foot. I\u2019m referring to <strong>Cramond Island<\/strong>, a <strong>tidal island<\/strong> connected to the village by a causeway of almost one mile of length. Anyway, it took a main role during the two <strong>World Wars<\/strong> when it was fortified in order to protect the <em>Firth of Forth<\/em> from any attack from torpedo boats and submarines. South Queensferry and Inchcolm Island<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Around ten miles to the north-west of <strong>Edinburgh city centre<\/strong>, the old Royal Burgh of <strong>South Queensferry <\/strong>lies on the shore of the <strong>Firth of Forth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s name derives from the ferry service established by <strong>Queen Margaret<\/strong> in the 11th century for pilgrims on their way to <a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/what-to-see-dunfermline-fife-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Dunfermline<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u2013 where she got married to King Malcolm III &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/top-things-to-see-in-st-andrews-fife-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>St Andrews<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>. The Queen died in 1093 and she made her final journey by ferry to Dunfermline Abbey. The service continued to operate until the opening of the Road Bridge in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>While in town you can admire the <strong>three<\/strong> <strong>Forth Bridges<\/strong> and especially the <strong>Forth Bridge<\/strong>. The island is also known as the \u201c<strong>Iona of the east coast<\/strong>\u201d as it\u2019s quite similar to the <strong>island of Iona<\/strong> on <strong>Scotland<\/strong>\u2019s west coast.<\/p>\n<p>From Easter to October the sightseeing cruise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maidoftheforth.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Maid of the Forth<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> operates <strong>boat trips<\/strong> departing from <strong>Hawes Pier<\/strong> that offer spectacular views under the <em>Forth Bridge<\/em> and across the <em>Firth of Forth<\/em>. Among all the tours I suggest you the <strong>Inchcolm Landing 3 hrs<\/strong>. Indeed, this one gives you the opportunity to spend 90 minutes exploring the island. From <em>St Andrews Square<\/em> take the 43\/X43 <em>Lothian Country<\/em> service and get off at the local <em>Police Station <\/em>located along the main street. <strong>By train<\/strong>, from Edinburgh Waverley to <strong>Dalmeny <\/strong>and then walk for 10-15 minutes to Hawes Pier under the Forth Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">6. Duddingston and Craigmillar Castle<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Duddingston<\/strong> is an old village that today it\u2019s part of <strong>Holyrood Park<\/strong>, around 2 km from <strong>Edinburgh <\/strong>city centre. It\u2019s one of my favourite places where to go to escape from the \u201cFringe madness\u201d in August.<\/p>\n<p>The original settlement dates back to 12th century when <strong>Duddinston Kirk <\/strong>was founded. Coming from the city, the view is dominated by <strong>Duddingston Loch<\/strong>, the perfect place to spot wildlife while in the past it was used for curling and ice-skating. Along <em>The Causeway <\/em>you can find the <strong>Sheep Heid Inn<\/strong>, considered the <strong>oldest pub in Scotland<\/strong>. Today it\u2019s a private area so I could just take a picture from outside.<\/p>\n<p>Near Duddingston there\u2019s <strong>Craigmillar Castle<\/strong>, the Edinburgh\u2019s \u201cother castle\u201d. <strong>Mary Queen of Scots <\/strong>stayed here in 1566, her room was located on the first floor of the tower house. This area of the building also house a prison and a stunning great hall.
