The tour started off in <strong>Dunfermline<\/strong>, a charming town famous for being the <strong>old capital of Scotland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What to see in Dunfermline in one day<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The town is located in west Fife, around 5 km from the northern shore of the Firth of Forth. Due to its <strong>short distance from<\/strong> <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong>, <strong>Dunfermline<\/strong> is the ideal destination for a <strong>day trip<\/strong>. Besides that, the main <strong>attractions<\/strong> are all within a <strong>walking distance<\/strong> so you will have plenty of time for the visit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>My itinerary begins at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiebirthplace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, located exactly in the cottage where Andrew was born in 1835. The visit includes the room on the second floor where his family lived. The father was a weaver and you can still see a loom on the first floor. Thanks to several investments in steel industry he became <strong>the richest man in the world<\/strong> and <strong>one of the most generous<\/strong> <strong>philanthropists of all time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, he gave away around 90% of his personal wealth supporting the founding of international landmarks like <em>Carnegie Halls<\/em> in New York, the <em>Peace Palace<\/em> in The Hague or the <em>Mount Wilson Observatory<\/em> in California. Besides that, he also funded around 2.800 <strong>public libraries<\/strong> worldwide and you can see the first one here in Dunfermline.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the Weaver\u2019s Cottage dated back to 1700s, the bulding also features the Museum Hall built in the 1920s, a small Victorian garden, temporary exhibitions and a children\u2019s area. I suggest you to explore <em>High Street<\/em>, <em>Bridge Street<\/em>, <em>Abbot Street<\/em> and <em>Maygate<\/em> as well.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point may be the <strong>Mercat Cross<\/strong>, dated back to 1626 but rebuilt and modified many times since then. It\u2019s a beautiful building constructed between 1875-79 with a perfect mixture of French, Gothic and Scots baronial architectural styles and a prominent four-face clock tower.<\/p>\n<p>Once in <strong>Maygate<\/strong> take a look at the stunning <strong>Abbot House<\/strong>, it&#8217;s <strong>the oldest secular building still standing in Dunfermline<\/strong>. It\u2019s known locally as <strong>The Glen<\/strong> and it\u2019s one of <strong>Scotland\u2019s most important and popular urban parks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the place where I spent most of the time because there\u2019re so many different areas to explore with also <strong>nice views<\/strong> of the Abbey and the Forth Bridges on the horizon. After Carnegie bought the area, it became a museum until its closure in May 2017 due to the opening of the Carnegie Library.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the park there\u2019re a lot of <strong>walks<\/strong> to do that also give you the opportunity to enjoy some beautiful <strong>gardens<\/strong>, all refurbished in 2016. Then it was the birthplace and residence of many <strong>Kings and Queens of Scotland<\/strong>. After the Reformation some additions and alterations were made and it became the personal <strong>residence of Queen Anna of Denmark<\/strong>, wife of King James VI. The <strong>last monarch to be born in Scotland <\/strong>was the future <strong>Charles I<\/strong> in 1600. She was the one who founded a priory in 1070 on the site where she had married Malcolm III. Then, in 1128 David I made the priory an abbey. Today, you can still see the original<strong> abbey\u2019s great nave<\/strong>, considered the <strong>most stunning example of Romanesque architecture in Scotland<\/strong>. For example, the <strong>Carnegie Hall<\/strong> is an Art Deco Theatre and very popular venue for drama, music, dance, comedy as well as children\u2019s shows. Just around the corner, the <em>Music Institute<\/em> and the <em>Studio Theatre<\/em> support local arts organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Another famous venue for live music, dance and comedy is the <strong>Alhambra Theatre<\/strong>. Located in <em>Glen Bridge Car Park<\/em>, it\u2019s the place where <strong>Queen Margaret<\/strong> went to pray over 900 years ago. To reach the cave you have to walk along the tunnel with 87 steps leading deep underground.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret was a Saxon Princess and became <strong>Queen of Scotland<\/strong> when she married King Malcolm in Dunfermline. In honour of her life, for the role she had in the renewal of the Church in Scotland and for all the miracles associated with her after the death, <strong>Pope Innocent IV<\/strong> made her a <strong>Saint<\/strong> in 1250.<\/p>\n<p>Today, this is <strong>the only place in UK directly linked to the Saint<\/strong>. I stayed at <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/gb\/the-city.en.html?aid=1139242&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>The City Hotel<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span>, originally built in 1775 in one of the oldest buildings on the main street.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel is located in the center of the town, the <strong>attractions<\/strong> and the <strong>bus station<\/strong> are within a walking distance. The 32 <strong>bedrooms<\/strong> are all <strong>en-suite <\/strong>and feature complimentary tea and coffee making facilities as well as\u00a0<strong>free WiFi<\/strong>. It\u2019s very easy to <strong>get there<\/strong> <strong>by public transport<\/strong> as you can <strong>travel by train or bus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From<\/strong> <strong>Edinburgh City <\/strong>just take <strong>Stagecoach<\/strong> <strong>bus service<\/strong> X55 \u2013 journey time is aprox. 60\u2019 \u2013 or the <strong>train<\/strong> from <strong>Waverley Station<\/strong>, around 45\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise \u2013 and that was my case \u2013 you can <strong>reach Dunfermline from Edinburgh Airport<\/strong> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stagecoachbus.com\/promos-and-offers\/east-scotland\/jet-747-edinburgh-airport-bus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em>Stagecoach&#8217;s JET747<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the bus connecting Edinburgh to Fife 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
