The town is also very popular because it&#8217;s near to <strong>Loch Ness<\/strong>, definitely one of <strong>top tourist attractions<\/strong> in Scotland. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitbritainshop.com\/world\/loch-ness-cruise\/?cid=e0c9905a7045450baf98f3a1cc4946b48924&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_content=referrer&amp;utm_source=stefano_bagnasco&amp;utm_campaign=affiliate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>Boat trips (tickets available online)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> run throughout the year so that <span class=\"\">you can explore the lake looking for the <strong>monster Nessie<\/strong>.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A weekend escape in Inverness<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Having said that, <strong>Inverness<\/strong> is the <strong>ideal destination for a weekend g<\/strong><strong>etaway <\/strong>because it offers <strong>plenty of things to do and see<\/strong> and then it&#8217;s impossible not to fall in love with its charming atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason I want to share with you the <strong>itinerary<\/strong> I followed during my recent trip:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/what-to-see-weekend-escape-inverness-highlands-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>first day of visit<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/what-to-see-weekend-escape-inverness-highlands-scotland\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>second day of visit<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/checkinblog.it\/en\/what-to-see-weekend-escape-inverness-highlands-scotland\/3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>useful information (how to get there, accomodations in town&#8230;)<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The first day<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I travelled <strong>by bus from Glasgow<\/strong> and I reach Inverness at around 1 pm. Before starting the visit I went to <a href=\"http:\/\/royalhighlandhotel.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>The Royal Highland Hotel<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> to leave the luggage at the reception as the<em> check-in<\/em> was available from 3 pm on.<\/p>\n<p>The first stop is just a few steps away from the hotel. The <strong>Victorian Market<\/strong> is a covered structure built around 1876 and then reopened in 1890-91 due to the fire that devastated the area few years before. Besides that, here <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"Inoltre, \u00e8 possibile ammirare alcuni degli edifici pi\u00f9 belli di Inverness, soprattutto proseguendo verso il fiume Ness che si vede in lontananza.\">it&#8217;s possible to admire some of the most beautiful buildings in <strong>Inverness<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"Inoltre, \u00e8 possibile ammirare alcuni degli edifici pi\u00f9 belli di Inverness, soprattutto proseguendo verso il fiume Ness che si vede in lontananza.\">A finest example of Georgian architecture is the <strong>Tolbooth Steeple<\/strong>, erected near the Old Court House in 1791. A local legend tells that one of the two balls on the spire contains a bottle of whisky produced in the Millburn Distillery. As I expected, a big section is dedicated to the <strong>Jacobite Rising<\/strong> of the 1745-1746 with objects belonged to <strong>Bonnie Prince Charlie<\/strong> and weapons collected at <em>Culloden Moor<\/em>, where on the 16th of April 1746 the loyalist troops of the Duke of Cumberland won against the Jacobite army. Then, a tower house was erected in 1508 while in 1562 it was besieged by the army of <strong>Mary Queen of Scots<\/strong>. In 1745 the <strong>Jacobite forces<\/strong> destroyed the castle and it remained ruined until 1834, when it was rebuilt as the new Sheriff Court House.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays the building is close to the public, except for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highlifehighland.com\/invernesscastleviewpoint\/castle-viewpoint-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>Inverness Castle Viewpoint<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><em>, <\/em>the newest attraction that allows visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the city and the scenery around. Reach the <strong>viewing platform<\/strong> to spot all the most important landmarks while discovering many of the interesting locals&#8217; legends.<\/p>\n<p>Another famous symbol of Inverness is the <strong>statue<\/strong> dedicated to the <strong>Jacobite heroine<\/strong> <strong>Flora MacDonald<\/strong> erected in 1899. This is one of the best places where to have fantastic sights at sunset. Three bridges &#8211; including the <strong>Greig Street Suspension Bridge<\/strong> built in 1881 &#8211; link the two sides of the city. During the walk you&#8217;ll appreciate the <strong>19th century Scottish Burgh architecture<\/strong> and other interesting historical sites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>St Andrew&#8217;s Cathedral<\/strong>, erected between 1866 and 1869 in Victorian Gothic style, it&#8217;s easily recognisable thanks to the two twin towers;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balnain House<\/strong>, a Georgian mansion used as a hospital for the soldiers of Duke of Cumberland after the battle of Culloden. In this area you can observe two building, witnesses of its past.<\/p>\n<p>The first one is the <strong>Dunbar&#8217;s Hospital<\/strong>, <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\">built in 1668 as a hospital for the poorest while today <\/span>it welcomes apartments and a shop. Not far from it there&#8217;s <strong>Albertarff House<\/strong>, dated 1593 so for this reason considered <strong>the oldest house in Inverness<\/strong>. I suggest you some options then it&#8217;s up to you to choose which one(s) you prefer.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nts.org.uk\/visit\/places\/culloden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>visit Culloden Battlefield<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, the <strong>last battle fought on Britain soil<\/strong>. It happened on the 16th of April 1746, with the final defeat of the <strong>Jacobite forces<\/strong> of <strong>Charles Edward Stuart<\/strong> against the government troops commanded by the Duke of Cumberland. The fight lasted just one hour and changed the way of life of the Highlands. The battlefield has free access and you can follow the footpaths to discover how the two sides marched against each other. In the exhitibion you can admire Jacobite artefacts, including weapons, clothing and coins and learn more about the Jacobite Rising as seen from both sides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culloden<\/strong> is easily reachable <strong>from Inverness by bus<\/strong>. Just take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stagecoachbus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>Stagecoach bus service n. 5<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, the return ticket costs \u00a34.20 and it&#8217;s valid throughout the day. Due to <strong>Outlander tv series<\/strong>, the historical sites has become really popular, lots and lots of people come here to pay their tribute to <strong>clan Fraser<\/strong> (even if <strong>Jamie<\/strong> is only a fictional character). For this reason my suggestion is to visit the battlefield in the early morning, with less tourists around.<\/p>\n<p>Related to the <strong>Diana Gabaldon&#8217;s romance<\/strong>, not far from Culloden there&#8217;s <strong>Clava Cairns<\/strong>, one of <strong>Scotland\u2019s most evocative prehistoric sites<\/strong>. The place is a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery including ring cairns and standing stones. It&#8217;s ideally located for visiting the capital of the Highlands and surroundings as it&#8217;s <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"Per il soggiorno in citt\u00e0 sono stato ospite del Royal Highland Hotel, adiacente alla stazione ferroviaria ed a 5 minuti dalla stazione degli autobus. \"><strong>adjacent to the train station<\/strong> and 5 minutes far from the <strong>bus station<\/strong>. The hotel has 84 rooms and 2 luxury suites, everyone with a unique style that combines traditional and modern elements and comforts. Not to mention the complimentary &#8220;welcome kit&#8221; with bottled waters, coffee, teas, and biscuits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once in the reception area, it&#8217;s impossible not to remain speechless when observing the <strong>Grand Staircase <\/strong>next to the <em>Gallery Cafe<\/em>.
