While settled in <strong><em>Perth <\/em><\/strong>and then in <strong><em>Pitlochry<\/em><\/strong> I had the chance to do <strong>5 excursions <\/strong>in their surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>Below I explain you more about the <strong>attractions<\/strong> I visited adding some practical information. As a matter of fact, even in this case I just travelled with public transport \u2013 by bus only \u2013 and I didn\u2019t have any kind of problem to plan my itineraries.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Banner sidebar 2 posizione --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2371415128508901\" data-ad-slot=\"1906925271\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">5 excursions to do in Perthshire: 1) Birnam and Dunkeld<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Birnam <\/strong>and <strong>Dunkeld<\/strong> are two lovely small villages 30 minutes far from <strong>Perth<\/strong>. In the day spent here I could enjoy natural beauties as well as relevant historical sites.<\/p>\n<p>The most famous attraction in <em>Birnam<\/em> is the <strong>Birnam Oak<\/strong>, the last survivor of the wood featured in <strong>Shakespeare\u2019s Macbeth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;Be brave like the lion and proud. Don\u2019t even worry about who hates you, who resents you, and who conspires against you. Macbeth will never be defeated until Birnam Wood marches to fight you at Dunsinane Hill.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Located a few hundred metres from the centre, simply follow the signpost and then you\u2019ll immediately recognise it for its huge dimensions and for the sticks that support its biggest trucks. Take a gentle walk across the woodland that lays on the bank of river Tay to appreciate other beautiful trees and natural sights.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the main road you can see the <strong>Beatrix Potter Exhibition and Garden<\/strong>, named after the English writer who spent her childhood holidays here. Originally the village used to be the first ecclesiastical capital of medieval Scotland as the first King of Scotland \u2013 Kenneth MacAlpin \u2013 moved the bones of St Columba here around the middle of 9th century. Overlooking the river Tay, the Cathedral was then built from the 12th to the 16th century. Luckily, this was the only one building that didn\u2019t suffer any big damage during <strong>The Battle of Dunkeld <\/strong>in 1689, fought between the <em>Jacobites<\/em> and a local garrison of the Cameronians who finally won.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1700s were built the famous <strong>Little Houses<\/strong> along the <em>High Street<\/em> that leads to <strong>The Cross<\/strong>, the old <em>Market Square<\/em> where today several shops are located. Here you can see the <strong>Memorial Fountain<\/strong> dedicated to <strong>George Murray 6th<\/strong> <strong>Duke of Atholl<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately I didn\u2019t have the time to visit <strong>The Hermitage<\/strong>, one of the most emblematic natural areas of <strong>central Scotland<\/strong>. --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1200\/900;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How to reach Birnam-Dunkeld<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Birnam and Dunkeld are easily reachable <strong>by car<\/strong> via the <em>A9 Road<\/em>, the main tourist route through Perthshire. <strong>Glasgow <\/strong>and <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong> airports are roughly one hour from Birnam while Inverness is around two hours.<\/p>\n<p>The towns share a <strong>railway station<\/strong> and there\u2019re also a regular bus services from the major Scottish cities. Actually it wasn\u2019t so easy to find because it\u2019s in a private estate and so that I had to spend two nights to figure out the right location. It took me almost two hours to reach it from the centre of the village. You have to go south-east, outpassing <em>Innerhadden<\/em>, <em>Tempar <\/em>and <em>Lassintullich<\/em>. Then, at the end of <em>Tay Forest<\/em> watch out on your left and you\u2019ll spot the fairy hill of <em>Craigh Na Dun<\/em>. You won\u2019t see the stones becase the ones used in the series are fakes. It looks like that Diana Gabaldon was inspired by the ones from <em>Clava Cairns <\/em>or <em>Callanish<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Back to Kinloch Rannoch, I followed part of the trail headed to <strong><em>Craig Varr<\/em><\/strong>, a craggy bluff overlooking the village from north. One of the highlights of the walk was undoubtedly the magnificent waterfall <strong>Allt Mor<\/strong>. Then I just had to continue up through the woodland until the gate. As I didn\u2019t have enough time to reach the top of <em>Craig Varr<\/em> I stopped there and I enjoyed the amazing view of Kinloch Rannoch and the hills around.<\/p>\n<p>While descending to the village I turned right following the sign for <strong>Loch Rannoch<\/strong>. The walk across the woodland is quite easy, the path is on a hilly route with a series of amazing panoramic sights to enjoy. Please pay attention to the sheer drops at the gorge edge.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that the actual woodland was laid out in 1796 as a result of a request by <strong>Robert Burns<\/strong> to the 4th Duke of Atholl? However, it seems that the name <em>Queen\u2019s View <\/em>is older and refers to <strong>Queen Isabella<\/strong>, wife of <strong>Robert the Bruce<\/strong>, who came here in the early 14th century. In my case, <a href=\"http:\/\/blair-castle.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Elizabeth Yule<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a> bus service <em>n. 82<\/em> takes around 15 minutes to reach the attraction departing from the bus stations of the town.<\/p>\n<p><em>These were the <strong>5 excursions in Perthshire<\/strong> I did while I stayed in <strong>Perth<\/strong> and then in <strong>Pitlochry<\/strong>. In that way I could discover different kinds of attractions that showed me the beauty of this Scottish region.
