Both areas of the city centre were included in the <strong>UNESCO World <\/strong><strong>Heritage Sites<\/strong> list in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the <strong>places of interest<\/strong> you may <strong>visit<\/strong>, I&#8217;d recommend staying in the <strong>Scottish Capital<\/strong> at least a couple of days. For this reason, I share with you an\u00a0<strong>itinerary<\/strong> comprehensive of some of the\u00a0<strong>Edinburgh must sees\u00a0<\/strong>together with a\u00a0<strong>day tour<\/strong> in the surroundings up to the Highlands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Visit Edinburgh, Day 1<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Exploring <strong>Edinburgh in <\/strong>just<strong> 24 hours<\/strong> is basically impossible. Today, along its streets &#8211; <em><i>Castle Esplanade<\/i>, <i>Castlehill<\/i>, <i>Lawnmarket<\/i>, <i>High Street<\/i> and <i>Canongate<\/i><\/em> <em>&#8211; <\/em>there&#8217;re lots of pubs (my favourites are\u00a0<strong>Deacon Brodies Tavern<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Royal Mile Tavern<\/strong>) and gift shops.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, take a look around the medieval buildings to spot the <strong>closes<\/strong>, small alleyways that lead to secret and silent areas, a hidden gems of <strong>Edinburgh Old Town<\/strong>. Then, there&#8217;re several museums that tell you more about the history of Edinburgh and its people. Then, reach <strong>The World&#8217;s End Pub<\/strong>, take a look of the wall outside and you&#8217;ll find out why it&#8217;s called in this way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Holyrood Palace<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Located at the end of the <strong>Royal Mile<\/strong> in <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong>, <strong>Holyrood Palace<\/strong> is the official residence of the Queen in <strong>Scotland<\/strong>. Usually She spends here one week every July so that in this period the Palace is closed to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the highlights of the visit are definitely the 16th century Apartments of <strong>Mary Queen of Scots <\/strong>and the <strong>State Apartments<\/strong>, still used today for official ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>Consider a couple of hour for exploring the Palace, its gardens and then the ruins of <strong>Holyrood Abbey<\/strong>, founded in 1128 by <strong>King David I <\/strong>and site of several coronations and Royal weddings as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tip<\/em>: you can <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><a class=\"vb_shop_link\" title=\"Palace of Holyroodhouse\" href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.co.uk\/edinburgh-l44\/palace-of-holyroodhouse-edinburgh-entrance-ticket-t53863\/?partner_id=T8F8PZB&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=button-cta&amp;cmp=EDIHOLYPAL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">buy your ticket in advance<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitbritainshop.com\/~\/media\/682788a1488748faad22a631d86f24a6.ashx?as=0&amp;w=1&amp;h=1&amp;cid=e8e7efed2b3f4669815e8aaf078ec2978810\" \/><\/strong> and you&#8217;ll receive an e-voucher &#8211; valid for one year &#8211; to hand in at the cash desk. The audio tour is included in the ticket price.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Calton Hill<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After visiting <em>Holyrood Palace<\/em> you can spend the rest of the afternoon exploring part of <strong>Edinburgh New Town<\/strong>. Take a stroll across <strong>Princes Street Gardens<\/strong> to enjoy a lovely view of Edinburgh Castle &#8211; reach the <em>Ross Fountain <\/em>in the west side &#8211; and then, if you love <strong>shopping<\/strong>, in <em>Princes Street<\/em> and <em>George Street <\/em>you find boutiques, stores and luxury brands.<\/p>\n<p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduzione\">There&#8217;s also plenty of choice of <strong>pubs<\/strong> and <strong>restaurants <\/strong>where to go for lunch and dinner. My favourite is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdwetherspoon.com\/pubs\/all-pubs\/scotland\/edinburgh\/the-standing-order-edinburgh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"> <em>Standing Order<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/strong> in <strong>George Street<\/strong>. It&#8217;s located in a <span lang=\"en\">neoclassical building that once hosted the Union Bank of Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduzione\">At the east end of <em>Princess Street<\/em> there&#8217;s <strong>Calton Hill<\/strong>, one of Edinburgh&#8217;s seven hills and one of the most iconic places of the city. As a matter of fact, from here you can enjoy a 360\u00b0 view of the Scottish capital, the Firth of Forth, the Fife&#8217;s coast and the Pentland Hills on the other side. The hill hosts some important monuments and buildings like the <strong>Nelson Monument<\/strong>, the <strong>National Monument<\/strong>, the <strong>City Observatory<\/strong> and the<strong> Dugald Stewart Monument<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduzione\">Sunrise and sunset times are possibly the best moments to walk up to Calton Hill. The most famous photographic spot is around <em>Dugald Stewart Monument<\/em>. Other two places to see are <strong>Well Court<\/strong> &#8211; with tenement flats that enclose a communal courtyard &#8211; and the <strong>Dean Cemetery<\/strong>, in which many well-known people like David Octavious Hill and Thomas Bouch are buried.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduzione\"><span lang=\"en\">In my case, as I went to Edinburgh in August for the <em>Fringe Festival<\/em>, the village was a tranquil oasis where to escape for a while from the chaos and the crowd of the centre.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduzione\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Holyrood Park<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ponds, hills, crags and several paths in a unique place in <strong>Edinburgh <\/strong>city centre. This is what makes <strong>Holyrood Park<\/strong> so special.<\/p>\n<p>Going for a hike in this Royal Park set just behind <strong>Holyrood Palace<\/strong> permits to discover the traces and the remaining elements of the ancient volcano named <strong>Arthur&#8217;s Seat<\/strong>. Today this is the highest point of the park as it sits 251m above sea and you&#8217;ll enjoy one of the best 360\u00b0 views of Edinburgh and its surroundings. Excluding the steady wind, the climb is quite easy and you can follow different trails that lead to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Next to <em>Holyrood Park<\/em> you can reach the village of <strong>Duddingston<\/strong> where you can relax along its <strong>loch<\/strong> and visiting <strong>Dr Neil&#8217;s Garden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Portobello<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Located east of the city centre, <strong>Portobello<\/strong> is a coastal village that became part of <strong>Edinburgh <\/strong>in 1896. Along its promenade &#8211; facing the wide sand beach &#8211; there&#8217;re many restaurants, even takeaway, where to stop and enjoying an amazing view of the <strong>Firth of Forth<\/strong> and the <strong>Fife<\/strong> coastline on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;re several <strong>bus<\/strong> services operated by <em>Lothian Buses<\/em> that link Portobello with Edinburgh city centre. From here &#8211; and from the nearby <strong>The Vennel<\/strong> &#8211; you have a stunning view of <em>Castle Hill<\/em> and obviously <strong>Edinburgh Castle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that in the past Grassmarket used to be a traditional square of public executions and many criminals lived here?<\/p>\n<p>For example <strong>Burke <\/strong>and <strong>Hare<\/strong>, two serial killers that in 1828 murdered 16 people.
